Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA)
The IMCA training course can be completed either as an online course or as a Level 4 optional unit. The course covers all the understanding required for the current Level 4 national independent advocacy qualification.
If you are an advocate and already qualified at Level 3 or 4, this course continues your development and provides a detailed understanding of the purpose of the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate role (IMCA).
For others, this course will provide a detailed understanding of the knowledge required to provide IMCA support.
You will have access to a range of informative and interesting video content supplemented by comprehensive resources for additional reading and guidance.
Course content:
- Understanding the role and responsibilities of an IMCA
- Who is entitled to IMCA support?
- Reinforcement of your understanding of Mental Capacity Legislation
- Use of non-instructed advocacy when working with people who lack capacity
- Strategies to ascertain the wishes and preferences of people receiving IMCA support
- How to work effectively with a range of decision makers
- Change of accommodation referrals
- Serious medical treatment referrals
- Interactions with other forms of independent advocacy support
- Preparing an IMCA report

- Online course costing £120 (+VAT) including videos made by us and by selected third parties, with additional materials providing the latest information and short quizzes to check your understanding, or
- If you are already qualified at Level 3 or 4 and want to do the full assessed unit, please contact us to discuss. Obtaining the assessed Level 4 optional unit (404) without the full qualification costs £795 (+VAT).
